Women’s Empathy Celebrated on CBS

The story giving rise to the televised upsurge of women’s empathy:

Castrating WifeCatherine Kieu Becker, 48, who police say drugged her estranged husband, tied him to a bed, cut off his penis with a knife and threw it down a garbage disposal in her home in Garden Grove, Calif.

From latimesblogs.latimes.com:

Becker, 48, faces one felony count each of torture and aggravated mayhem with sentencing enhancements for great bodily injury and personal use of a knife. If convicted on all counts, she faces a maximum sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole.

The husband told police that his wife served him dinner and that he went to bed about 9 p.m. While he was sleeping, she “tied the victim’s legs and arms to the four corners of the bed with nylon ropes,” prosecutors said.

The victim told authorities that when he woke up, his wife pulled down his pants, “grabbing the victim’s penis and severing it with a knife.” She then took the penis to the kitchen and threw it in the garbage disposal, “turning it on and mutilating the organ.”

She then called 911.

The husband underwent surgery but the severed organ could not be reattached.

Citations from the show in the Washington Post/blogs:

“I don’t know the circumstances,” host Sharon Osbourne said. “However, I do think it’s quite fabulous.” What sounded like the entire audience began to laugh.

The other panelists — Leah Remini, Julie Chen, Holly Robinson Peete and Sara Gilbert — didn’t revel in the story quite as much. But all of the hosts let out at least a small chuckle during the conversation.

Gilbert pointed out that the conversation could be perceived as sexist. “Not to be a total buzz kill,” Gilbert began, “but it is a little bit sexist. If somebody cut a woman’s breast off, nobody would be sitting laughing.”

“It’s different,” Osbourne said, before comparing the two parts of the anatomy.

A comment on the youtube page of the above video:

“Look, calm down, stop ranting about cunts and crimes you’ll never commit. Can we accept that a serious problem exists, namely, women can’t, won’t, at any rate don’t empathise with men’s feelings, to the point of finding this horror hilarious, and this isn’t going to go away on its own? Realistic political action is needed, starting with getting this kind of disgusting celebration and promotion of genital mutilation banned from TV, as a 1st step to helping women understand mutilation is never OK.”

From a comment on a blog discussing the show:

I also wrote a complaint on CBS’s web feedback page:

I was appalled at the segment from last Thursday’s episode which discussed the mutilation of a man’s genitalia at the hands of his soon-to-be ex-wife. Sharon Osborne’s mock-celebratory comments in particular were grossly objectionable. Though Sara Gilbert tried to inject a modicum of civility to the discussion, it was entirely too little and the whole segment was really ghastly.

No TV network would ever tolerate a panel of men laughing and joking about a man mutilating a woman’s genitalia in this manner.

Though executive producer Sara Gilbert has impressed me over the years as an intelligent, independent thinker, she should be taken to task for allowing this kind of hateful banter. Sharon Osborne should lose her job.

Another comment on the same blog:

Here is what I sent to CBS via their feedback form tool on the CBS internet site:

With all of the violent, racist, mean-spirited and downright insane things on television, it has been over 30 years since I have felt strongly enough to complain directly to a network for something people were subjected to on a network television program.

That over 30 year streak of silence has now been shattered. It has been shattered by the Thursday July 14th broadcast of “The Talk.” On this program the hosts of the show took it upon themselves to mock, belittle and make fun of an actual living person’s misfortune that took place in the form of the physical mutilation he suffered at the hands of his obviously mentally unstable wife. The hosts viewed this apparently as something that should be made fun of. I don’t agree. Sharon Osbourne’s performance was particularly egregious. She should lose her job on the show immediately. That is the least that should happen here.

For my part, I am going to organize a boycott of all CBS programming and I’m going to start a letter writing campaign targeting all the sponsors and advertisers of that days “The Talk” program. I am filing a complaint with the FCC and I will also be contacting CBS Investor Relations. I will be inviting all my friends and contacts to do the same. I believe the producers and hosts of this segment of “The Talk” should also be held accountable for their actions in this matter.

A comment of a group on facebook demanding an apology:

With regards to your show “The Talk” and the hostesses sexist, hateful, double standard and inhuman utterings on said show, I’d like to see them have the gentleman on the show who was mutilated for “filing for divorce” and have all those women apologize face to face to him.

We wouldn’t accept LESS if somehow men were saying the same ab…out women’s breasts or labia/clitori being ripped off their body, or tormented/mutilated in some way.

Face to face apology, written apology, CBS needs to get with it.

Untill this happenes, I shall boycot CBS and any company that is affiliated with you and advice everyone I know to do the same and also post this complaint in as many places on the internet as I can possibly manage.

For shame…

As mensactivism.org reports, yet another tv-show hostess shows off her female supremacism in a video interview when asked about the case:

Wendy Williams Claims ‘Penis Disposal’ Was ‘Efficient’

Wendy Williams, the American television personality, chatting with reporters outside Boa’s Steakhouse in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. Williams, wearing an elegant purple dress, was quizzed on the recent story about a Californian woman drugging her husband and chopping off his penis before dumping it in the garbage disposal.

Williams sympathized with the woman, saying, “When you cross a woman all is fair”. She later joked, “It was more efficient then throwing it in a field, where they could pick it up. Dispose of it the right way”. Los Angeles, California – 15.07.2011

Another site preferred to take no notice of the non-humorous dimension of the interview:

Wendy Williams has a wicked sense of humor.

The talk show host, who was caught by photographers Wednesday night at Boa, was asked about the California woman who cut off her husband’s penis and put it in a garbage disposal.

The Dancing with the Stars alum joked, ”It was more efficent than throwing it in a field where they could pick it up. If you’re going to do it — do it properly.”

You’ve gotta love a woman who’s all about etiquette.

The later part of the interview is omitted in both publications above:

When she was asked how could a man get even in the reverse case, she hesitated and then said,

“It’s not that serious. It’s not about the crime of the penis, it more about the jailtime she’s gonna have to do, I think that’s probably what I feel more about. Because men are like buses I guess, in a lot of cases, a good one’s hard to come by … but they are out there.”

Wendy Williams has her daily one hour tv-show, and is called a New York Times besteller author.

For the records, as I came across another celebrity’s comment, reality show star Gretchen Rossi feels “sad” for the man who lost genitals, when asked in the street at night, but she was accompanied by her boyfriend and another couple, and one of the men answered first he was horrified. So a compassionate tone was set.

Prelude stimulating in detail the act of mutilation weeks before it happened:

Sharon Osbourne says she would have done to Arnold Schwarzenegger exactly what she later made fun about in the CBS-show “The Talk”. Arizona Central cites Sharon Osbourne:

She told ETOnline.com: “I was really, really disappointed at him for being so horribly disrespectful and deceitful to do that in your own home. He can do whatever he wants in hotels on the road, whatever, knock yourself out, but you don’t disrespect your family by doing it in your own home. To me it’s just unthinkable.

“I would have chopped his willy (penis) off. Arnie’s willy would have been down the disposal unit spinning around, that’s where it’d be – and I’d make her clean it up. That mop would have been wrapped around her head.”

A possible outcome of the outrage against her evil witch’s delight in the genital mutilation case:

(…) Osbourne confirms she will be taking a break from the daytime talk show when it returns in the fall.”I’ve kept it no secret that I really miss my husband,” She told AOL TV, explaining her reason for the departure. “He’ll have been on tour for 18 months by the time it’s over. I’ve spent a lot of time away from him. He gets a break at the end of September and so I’ve asked [the show] for a little break so I can be with him.’

The (female) author suspects tensions between Osbourne and the other hostesses being the reason for her taking a break, but there is no word about her comments on the Catherine Kieu case.

(Via Reddit) Another female author, this time of a Philipino paper:

All you did was approve of the gesture a wife accorded her husband after she found out he had been horrendously unfaithful to her.  What was wrong with that?  You did not tell all women to cut off their husband’s if they discovered him to be unfaithful.  That takes either extraordinary rage or extraordinary bravery but that one woman had both  and did it then liquified it, I think that deserves applause [bold by author].  Don’t listen to the few males who sent their opinions. Anybody who objects, read his opinion on air but don’t apologize for your behavior.  You did no wrong.

Before that she explains this as her reaction to an obviously enforced apology of the hostesses for their making fun about the mutilation and Sharon Osbourne’s applauding it, aired in the meantime, reported here:

Sharon tried to maintain a straight face but couldn’t control her laughter.  Thankfully, Lea Remini stepped in and said the ladies of The Talk do not condone cutting off a man’s penis (in case you had a doubt).  Sharon was able to compose herself and made the following statement,

“I do not condone genital mutilation and I didn’t mean any harm by laughing about it and I’m sorry that I offended people cause that’s not my intention or the intention of the show – it’s not what we are about.” [bold deleted by author]

Sharon, the notorious proponent of dick-cutting (mtv.co.uk 2007):

Sharon Osbourne has let rip on Queens Of The Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, saying that she hopes his manhood drops off and gets eaten by, erm, his mum.

(…) The QOTSA man said that hed never play the festival again because They treat bands like sh*t.

In response, Sharon raised the bar on bad taste, and wished him the following: “I hope he gets syphilis and dies, Sharon cheerfully told Blender magazine. “I hope his dick fu*king falls off so his mother can eat it.”

Another tv-show where the female host laughs about Catherine Kieu’s crime and wonders why there are no more stories out there about men’s penises being cut off: Alyona’s Happy Hour on RT, starting at 7:30:

Notice how she as well as her female guest have absolutely no inkling of doubt about the righteousness of making fun of the issue, not even the male guest can get his protest out in a serious manner, so domineering is the upwelling of their merry mood. And this is supposed to be acceptable as an intellectually sound and educated panel.

The message is clear: Partner violence of women against men is justified. Let us applaud the courageous sisters! Serves them right those jerks! That’s what you get if you dare cheat on your wife! Lorena Bobbit was the pioneer, she got away with it. That set the example, and feminists all over the world celebrated her, then.

As in many commentaries in the men’s rights blogging area, what can one state as conclusion but: Women of this time are a worse trash than anybody would have deemed even in their most desperate situations of being cruelly mistreated as husbands and fathers or just as penis bearers?
